KAMBERI

The Kamberi people are found in Magama, Agwariga, Mariga, Rijau, Borgu, and Washishi L.G.As of Niger state. They are also found in Ngaski, and Yauri L.G.As of Kebbi state. They number about 150,000 in population. The Kamberi have about nine different dialects.

These are Avadi, Agadi, Beangi, Ashigini, Agaushi, Yumu, Kimba, and Nwanci. Hausa is their trade languae. The people are predominantly farmers, with guinea corn, maize, and millet as their major crops.

RELIGION
The people are predominantly idol worshipers. Their cultures and values are controlled by their strong believe in their chief god akpereshi who has other gods under it with different alters or shrines all over the land and are greatly feared and respected.

They believe every body has his/her own spirit guiding him/her, and alters are raised in rooms or other places where sacrifices are made for the spirits either for thanksgiving or request in case of problem.

ATTITUTDE TOWARDS OTHER RELIGION
Very few have been lured into Islam by the Hausa-Fulanis who live among them. This is especially the case when one wants to hold any recognizable position in the communities like kingship (Sarki or Mai-Anguwa). The Hausa-Fulani Moslems have been trying to use these sarkis (Chiefs) to Islamize the people but they have not been successful because the people believe that Islam cannot offer them any good thing rather, they see the religion as an instrument of intimidation and slavery.

Though they would prefer Christianity to Islam, they try to resist any attempt by Christian witness to stop them from their loyalty to their gods. This they believe cannot be compromised.

MCM AND KAMBERI
Late last year, MCM conducted a research among the Kamberi Agadi in Rijau ocal Government Area of Niger state. The report showed that this group of Kamberis with several villages have no single church among them. The way we were received by the kamberi agadis made us to believe that it was time for us to move in and preset Christ to them using education as a tool. In one of our meetings with the elders in order to share our vision with them and hear their minds, two of the elders spoke thus: “our problem here is that we the elderly ones and our children are backward in the area of education. We don’t know how to read nor write in Hausa talk less of English. We desire and hunger to know how to read and write at least in Hausa. That we cannot read a letter sent to us except we look for a literate person outside our community is shameful”. In as much as water and hospital are important, education is our priority, but our problem is you people. We are ready to receive you with four hads, and ready to give you place to build house if you mean to stay in our community”

Beyond the issue of education, we want to become Christians; we want to stop some things we practice that doesn’t please God for our own good”

MCM VISION IN KAMBERI
Our vision in kamberi is to embark on a contextualized evangelism/indigenous church planting, using literacy class as a tool so as to raise indigenous believers who will grow in ministry and leadership to be able to reach their own people.

Already a Missionary Couple, Bro. Ezekiel Hamman and his wife Esther have been sent to pioneer our church planting effort among this people. We believe that the Lord will use the effort MCM to make a difference in the lives of the Kamberi people especially the Kamberi Agadis.
